A writ petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the government's decision to revoke the license of Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar.
Supreme Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the public interest litigation on Monday (June 15). A High Court bench comprising Justice Razik Al Jalil and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury is scheduled to hear the matter.
The petition challenges both the recent license revocation and the validity of the Medical Practice and Private Clinics and Laboratories Regulation Ordinance of 1982, the legal framework under which the government acted.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) canceled the hospital's license on June 11, following the deaths of six newborns on May 27. The DGHS stated that the hospital’s official explanation for the tragedy was unsatisfactory, though it granted authorities a 30-day window to appeal the decision.
The incident occurred in the hospital’s post-delivery ward the day before Eid. A subsequent Health Ministry probe committee found clear evidence of institutional negligence. According to the investigation report, the newborns likely died from high carbon dioxide levels caused by severe overcrowding, prolonged air conditioning outages, and a complete lack of alternative ventilation in the ward.
