Police say a man killed a woman and her three-year-old daughter in Faridpur and buried their bodies beside a pond to hide the crime.

The accused, Md. Ujjal Khan, allegedly confessed to the murders after his arrest, according to police. Ujjal is the son of late Shahjahan Khan of Bakartila Khaserkol village in Mangalpur union of Goalanda upazila, Rajbari.

Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police Fatema Islam said Jahanara Begum, 30, had an extramarital relationship with Ujjal while both worked at a brick kiln in Amin Bazar, Dhaka. Police said the relationship lasted about three years and Jahanara had recently pressured Ujjal to marry her.

According to investigators, Ujjal called Jahanara to Jamtala Bazar on May 4. After attending a Milad Mahfil at a relative’s house, she went there with her daughter, Samia.

Police said Ujjal later took them to a secluded pond area in Kalitala of Char Madhabdia union in Faridpur Sadar upazila. An argument reportedly broke out over marriage and their relationship.

Investigators said that around 11:30 pm, Ujjal assaulted Jahanara and later strangled her to death. When Samia began crying, he allegedly strangled the child as well.

Police said Ujjal then brought a spade from a nearby house, dug a pit beside the pond, buried the bodies, and covered the area with banana plants in an attempt to conceal the crime. The spade used in the burial has been seized.

After the bodies were recovered on May 14, Jahanara’s father, Md. Lalon Mollah, filed a murder case with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station. Sub-Inspector Abul Basar Mollah later arrested Ujjal on May 16 using information gathered through the investigation and technology-based tracking, police said.

Jahanara was the daughter of Md. Lalon Mollah of Shibaloy upazila in Manikganj and the wife of Amjad Sheikh of Goalanda upazila in Rajbari. Samia was the couple’s only daughter.

Police have filed a case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the Penal Code in connection with the incident.
