A contractor died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday morning, three days after being brutally stabbed allegedly for demanding outstanding dues for a building construction project in Sonargaon upazila, Narayanganj.
The deceased, Nuruddin Hawlader, was the son of Selim Hawlader from Malerhat village in Bhola district. He had been residing in the Meghna Industrial Area New Town residential area.
According to local sources, Nuruddin managed the construction of a house owned by one Abdur Rob in the Ganganagar area about two years ago. Although the project was completed, Abdur Rob and his two sons, Hridoy and Shuvo, allegedly refused to clear the remaining dues and had been threatening the contractor for a long time.
The dispute escalated on Thursday afternoon (May 14) when Abdur Rob and his sons arrived at Nuruddin’s residence on a motorcycle, demanding that he complete some remaining work on the building. When Nuruddin asked for his pending payment first, an argument broke out. During the altercation, Hridoy allegedly stabbed Nuruddin with a switchblade, causing him to collapse. The attackers then fled the scene on their motorcycle.
Locals rescued the critically injured contractor and rushed him to the Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to DMCH, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning.
Jamal Hossain, Inspector (Investigation) of Sonargaon Police Station, stated that the body is currently kept at the DMCH morgue for an autopsy. "The accused have been absconding since the incident. Multiple police teams are conducting operations to arrest them, and a thorough investigation is underway," the officer added.
