


Dr. Md. Latiful Islam has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI). The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock confirmed the appointment in an official order signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Nasrin Chowdhury on July 13.
Prior to this elevation Dr. Islam briefly served as the institute’s Director of Administration and Finance.
Dr. Islam brings decades of research and administrative experience to the role. He spent 28 years at BFRI’s Brackish Water Station in Paikgachha, Khulna, joining as a Scientific Officer in 1998 and eventually rising to Chief Scientific Officer. During his tenure there, he made significant contributions to coastal aquaculture, pioneering advanced breeding technologies for various high-value coastal fish and crab species.
An accomplished academic, Dr. Islam earned his PhD in Mariculture from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2015, specializing in the captive breeding and seed production of the green mud crab. He has published over 50 research articles in national and international journals. Under his leadership, the Paikgachha center gained national recognition, securing first place in the government's Annual Performance Agreement (APA) for three consecutive years.
