The water level of the Teesta River in Nilphamari has dropped below the danger mark following an overnight surge triggered by heavy rainfall and upstream flows.
As of noon on Tuesday, water at the Teesta Barrage in Dalia was recorded at 52.10 metres, sitting 5 centimetres below the danger threshold of 52.15 metres. The river had previously peaked at 52.25 metres on Monday night before steadily receding by Tuesday morning.
To effectively manage the rising waters and mitigate widespread damage, the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) opened all 44 gates of the barrage overnight.
Despite the receding water levels, the initial surge inundated several low-lying regions in Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas on Monday afternoon. Local union council officials confirm that thousands of residents are currently affected. Flooding has left approximately 1,200 families stranded in the Jharsingheswar and Purbachhatnay villages. Additionally, around 1,350 families remain marooned in the Char areas of Tepakharibari Union. Authorities continue to monitor the flood plains as affected communities await further relief.
