Driven by heavy rainfall and an influx of upstream waters, the Teesta River is flowing 10 cm above the danger mark at the Dalia point, flooding low-lying regions and char (river island) areas in Lalmonirhat.
The sudden rise in water levels has submerged vast tracks of croplands across six unions in Hatibandha upazila. The flash flood has triggered severe anxiety among riverside residents, who now face the imminent threat of flooding and river erosion.
According to local authorities, the water level at the Teesta Barrage's Dalia point reached 52.25 meters on Sunday night, surpassing the danger threshold of 52.15 meters.
"The river is rising rapidly due to the upstream rush of water," said Nurul Islam, the water gauge reader at Dalia point.
To manage the rising water pressure, authorities have opened all 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage.
Shunil Kumar Roy, Executive Engineer of the Dalia Water Development Board, stated that the situation is being closely monitored. "Residents living in the lower reaches of the Teesta have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions," he added.
