The promise to protect the Teesta River now appears limited to official statements. In reality, illegal sand extraction is continuing openly across several areas of Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat. Locals allege that despite ongoing river cutting and sand lifting in plain sight, there has been no visible action from the administration.
According to local sources, at least 10 tractors transport sand daily from the Teesta River between Mohipur Bridge and Tushbhandar Bazar in Kaliganj upazila.
In addition, around 30 vehicles reportedly carry sand every day from different points in Kaliganj Bazar and nearby areas.
Residents said five vehicles regularly transport sand from the Kakina Rudreshwar Sirajul Market area, while another five vehicles operate between Kakina Mahishamuri and Aminganj Bazar. At least 10 more vehicles are allegedly involved in sand extraction around Hazirhat Bazar, Sonardighi Par, Kashiram, Munsir Bazar and Teestarpar areas.
Large-scale sand extraction is also reportedly taking place along the Teesta riverbanks near Chowdhuryhat Bazar, Bhullarhat Sena Kalyan area, the Power Plant area and the western side of Hazrania Bazar in Votmari.
Locals claim that the highest level of sand extraction is occurring near Kashiram Munsir Bazar, the river area in front of Jalal Master’s house in Kashiram, areas adjacent to Chowdhuryhat Bazar and river sections near the Votmari Sena Camp and Power Plant area.
Environmental activists and concerned residents fear that unchecked sand extraction could alter the river’s natural flow, accelerate erosion and cause long-term environmental damage. They also allege that influential groups continue these activities due to weak monitoring and enforcement.
When contacted, Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Rashedul Haque Pradhan said the administration is aware of the allegations regarding illegal sand extraction and that mobile court drives will be conducted soon.
