The 6th death anniversary of Shajahan Siraj—a veteran freedom fighter, reader of the Liberation War manifesto, and former minister—was observed with due solemnity on Tuesday.
The Shajahan Siraj Foundation, Kalihati Shajahan Siraj College, and Shajahan Siraj Welfare Trust jointly organized day-long commemorative programs. Local Member of Parliament Lutfar Rahman Matin attended the events as the chief guest.
The day began with placing floral wreaths at Siraj’s grave in Dhaka's Banani Cemetery and at his portrait in Kalihati. Additional activities included Quran recitations, food distribution among underprivileged children, and special prayers across various mosques and temples in the Upazila.
Later, a memorial meeting and prayer mahfil took place at the Rabeya Siraj Academic Bhaban on the Kalihati Shajahan Siraj College campus. The gathering was presided over by his daughter, Supreme Court lawyer and College Governing Body President Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla. His wife, Rabeya Siraj, addressed the audience as the principal speaker. Local BNP leaders, teachers, and followers also shared their memories, reflecting on his enduring legacy.
One of the central organizers of the 1971 Liberation War and former Vice-Chairman of the BNP, Shajahan Siraj passed away in Dhaka on July 14, 2020, at the age of 77.
