A vital 250-meter stretch of road connecting the Kachakata bus stand to the local market in Nageshwari upazila, Kurigram, has become a severe hazard for daily commuters. Left without maintenance for an extended period, the road's surface has deteriorated entirely, leaving behind deep potholes. Even minor rainfall triggers severe waterlogging and deep mud.
The deteriorating infrastructure has disrupted both daily life and local commerce. Thousands of people rely on this route to access Kachakata Hat. Heavy traffic, including freight trucks, auto-rickshaws, and local vehicles, constantly struggle through the hazards, resulting in frequent accidents.
Local businesses are taking a direct financial hit. Traders Anisur Rahman and Mostafizur Rahman noted that the treacherous conditions deter customers, sharply reducing daily sales. Pedestrians Jahangir Alam and Afzal Hossain added that navigating the muddy water, whether on foot or by motorcycle, has become perilous.
Students face some of the worst impacts. Shiuli Khatun and Alamgir Hossain explained that taking alternative routes adds significant time to their school commute. However, using the main road often results in slips and falls, ruining their uniforms and books in the mud and forcing them to return home instead of attending classes.
Despite mounting public frustration, authorities have taken no visible steps to repair the public roadway. Attempts to reach Upazila Engineer (A.D.) Mamunur Rahman for comment were unsuccessful, as repeated phone calls went unanswered. Locals are urgently demanding immediate repairs to restore safe transit and revive the local economy.
