A 60-year-old woman, who had gone missing early Wednesday morning, was rescued after being discovered perched high in a large tamarind tree in Kurigram’s Sadar Upazila.
The woman, identified as Sajeda Begum, wife of Md. Abu Sayeed, went missing from her home in the Anandabazar area. After a frantic search, relatives located her sitting and lying on the branches of a tree near her house, an incident that drew a large crowd and caused brief panic in the locality.
The Kurigram Fire Service and Civil Defense arrived at the scene shortly after being notified. However, the rescue operation faced an initial delay as family members, concerned for her safety and mental state, were hesitant to let the team intervene immediately.
The situation came to a sudden end when Sajeda jumped from the tree into a nearby pond. Firefighters and locals quickly pulled her from the water.
Enamul Haque, Deputy Assistant Director of the Kurigram Fire Service, confirmed the rescue. "We were on standby because of the family's concerns. Fortunately, after she jumped into the pond, we were able to bring her to safety immediately," he said.
Initial reports from family members and officials suggest the woman may be suffering from mental health issues. She has been handed over to her family for further care.
