A 24-year-old woman was killed after being run over by the Prabal Express train in Boalkhali upazila of Chattogram on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Pompi Barua, whose village home is in Raozan, according to documents recovered from her handbag.

The accident occurred at around 2:30pm on Sunday (August 30) near the No. 13 Bridge area of East Kalurghat under Boalkhali municipality.According to railway authorities, the Prabal Express was travelling from Cox’s Bazar toward Chattogram city when the accident occurred.

Gomdandi Railway Station Master Kanchan Bhattacharya said the train left Gomdandi station at around 2:30pm.

“We learned that a woman had been run over by the train. The railway police have been informed,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding how the woman came onto the railway tracks were not immediately clear.

The woman's identity was confirmed through a discharge document from the Kidney Disease Department of Chattogram Medical College Hospital found inside her vanity bag.

The document identified her as Pompi Barua and mentioned Raozan as her village home. The hospital document was issued on January 20 this year.

Railway police were informed following the incident and are expected to take the necessary legal steps regarding the body and investigate the circumstances of the accident.

The incident has once again raised concerns over safety around railway tracks in Chattogram, particularly in areas where trains pass through populated communities.
