A long-standing dispute between two rival groups in Sunamganj’s Shantiganj upazila escalated into a fatal clash on Tuesday night, leaving one person dead and several others injured. Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the violence.
The conflict erupted in Astma village between factions led by Najib Ali, 70, and Arish Ali, 55. According to local police, an initial altercation occurred at Astma Point around 6:40 PM. Tensions flared again at 10:00 PM near a mobile tower beside Najib Ali’s residence, resulting in a violent confrontation.
At least half a dozen individuals sustained injuries. Rustam Ali, 35, a supporter of the Arish Ali faction, was critically injured during the second clash. Locals rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Following the violence, police launched a drive and arrested faction leader Najib Ali, alongside Russel Ahmed and Jewel Mia.
Shantiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aliullah confirmed the arrests, noting the suspects were sent to court under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
"We are preparing to file a regular murder case once a formal complaint is received," OC Aliullah stated. "Police operations are ongoing to identify and apprehend others involved."
Additional police forces have been deployed to Astma village to maintain order and prevent further violence, as tensions in the area remain high.
