In Lama upazila of Bandarban, around 10 acres of hill have allegedly been cut and leveled for establishing a brick kiln, raising concerns over possible environmental violations.
Locals say Lokman Hossain, from Satkania upazila of Chattogram, is involved in hill cutting activities in the Banshkhailla Jhiri area under Phansiakhali union.
The activity is reported to have damaged nearby forests, ravines, natural water channels, and local biodiversity.
Md Osman Gani, a local resident, submitted a written complaint to the Bandarban Department of Environment on Sunday (May 17), requesting action against the alleged activities.
According to the complaint and local sources, the hill was cut and leveled without approval or environmental clearance. A large portion has already been prepared for a brick kiln. A natural ravine was also filled with soil to allow movement of heavy vehicles.
Osman Gani said the land was jointly purchased, but hill cutting began later without informing other partners, which he described as fraudulent.
Residents expressed concern that continued hill cutting ahead of the monsoon could increase the risk of landslides, reduce access to drinking water, and cause environmental damage. They also warned that blocking natural drainage may lead to waterlogging and flash floods.
They have urged the authorities to stop the activity immediately and take legal action against those responsible.
However, Lokman Hossain denied the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated. He said the matter should be properly investigated by the administration.
Md Nur Uddin, Inspector of the Bandarban Department of Environment, said hill cutting is illegal in the region. He confirmed receiving the complaint and said an on-site investigation will be conducted soon. Legal action will follow if violations are confirmed.
