A Chattogram court on Sunday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a drug smuggling case filed with Akbar Shah Police Station.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Afroza Jasmine Koli of the Fourth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Court.
The convict, Md. Zafar, 53, is the son of Md. Hashem, hailing from the Jatrabari area in Dhaka.
According to Bench Assistant Naeem Hossain, the court handed down the life sentence after five witnesses testified, proving Zafar guilty of trafficking Phensedyl. The court also fined him BDT 10,000. Failure to pay will result in an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.
Zafar was tried in absentia, and the court has issued an arrest warrant against him.
Case documents show that on March 12, 2018, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) intercepted a white private car in the East Feroz Shah Colony area. A search of the vehicle yielded 1,199 bottles of Phensedyl. RAB-7 Inspector Amal Chanda subsequently filed a case with Akbar Shah Police Station, leading to the investigation, charge sheet, and ultimate trial.
