Two Sentenced to Life in Chattogram Drug Case Involving Nearly 10,000 Yaba Tablets

A court in Chattogram has sentenced two men to life imprisonment for possessing and transporting nearly 10,000 yaba tablets in a drug trafficking case filed in 2022.

The verdict was delivered on Monday (July 20) by Fourth Additional Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Afroza Jesmin Koli.

The convicted men are Md. Arif, 29, of West Kokdandi in Banshkhali upazila, and Md. Maruf, 23, of Ilsha.

According to court bench assistant Nayeem Hossain, the prosecution proved the charges through the testimony of six witnesses. In addition to life imprisonment, the court fined each convict Tk 10,000, with an additional three months of simple imprisonment in default of payment.

Court records show that on August 19, 2022, members of RAB-7 set up a temporary checkpoint on the Outer Ring Road near Muslimabad intersection in Patenga. Officers signaled a Super GL microbus traveling from Faujdarhat toward Patenga Sea Beach to stop. Two occupants allegedly attempted to flee but were detained.

Based on information provided by the suspects, officers recovered 9,635 yaba tablets, 15 grams of yaba powder, and seized the microbus used to transport the drugs. The narcotics were reportedly concealed in a shopping bag hidden beneath the driver's seat.

Following the operation, RAB-7 Inspector (City and Traffic) Md. Zahirul Islam filed a case with Patenga Model Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
