PM Reaffirms Labour Rights Commitment in Key ILO Meeting

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to protecting workers' rights, enhancing workplace safety, and upholding international labour standards. This pledge was made during a meeting with International Labour Organization (ILO) Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo on Monday at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka.

During the talks, Houngbo praised Bangladesh's ongoing labour reforms, noting that the country's efforts are earning positive international recognition. The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation to improve social protections, boost skills training, and prepare a modern workforce capable of meeting global market demands.

Key priorities addressed included safety advancements in the readymade garment (RMG) sector and the development of the informal labour market. They also emphasized the welfare of migrant workers, focusing on safe, orderly migration and better skills training for those seeking overseas employment.

Houngbo congratulated Prime Minister Rahman on assuming office, stating that international confidence in Bangladesh has strengthened following the transition to a government elected by direct public vote. The ILO chief expressed a strong desire to deepen the long-standing partnership to further elevate the country's labour sector.

Additionally, Houngbo congratulated the Prime Minister on the recent election of Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, as President of the 81st UN General Assembly session, calling it a significant milestone for Bangladesh’s growing diplomatic credibility.
