A video showing U.S. President Donald Trump presenting a FIFA World Cup winners' medal to Spain's Lamine Yamal has gone viral on social media after viewers debated whether the teenage star shook hands with the U.S. president.
Trump attended the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium, where Spain defeated defending champion Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim the title. He remained on the field for the post-match medal ceremony.
Spain secured victory through Ferran Torres' decisive goal in the 106th minute, but much of the online discussion afterward centered on 19-year-old winger Lamine Yamal.
Yamal became one of the youngest players in history to win the FIFA World Cup, lifting the trophy in his first appearance at the tournament.
During the medal presentation, a video filmed from one camera angle appeared to show Yamal walking past Trump without shaking his hand, prompting widespread speculation on social media.
However, footage captured from another angle shows that Trump placed the winner's medal around Yamal's neck and that the two did shake hands before the player continued speaking with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The differing camera angles led to confusion online, fueling viral posts before additional footage clarified what occurred during the ceremony.
