Tensions flared after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final as players from Spain and Argentina became involved in a heated confrontation following Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory at MetLife Stadium.
The incident began shortly after the final whistle when Spain midfielder Rodri celebrated the victory near Argentina defender Nahuel Molina. According to reports, Molina objected to the celebration, leading to a verbal exchange that quickly escalated.
Spain defender Eric García stepped in to calm the situation and attempted to separate the players. Moments later, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes allegedly shoved García, drawing more players from both teams into the confrontation.
Spain midfielder Gavi then confronted Paredes, leading to another exchange of pushes between the two players as tensions intensified.
The situation escalated further when Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada became involved. According to reports, Almada wrestled Gavi to the ground during the altercation, while Paredes allegedly pushed the Spanish midfielder again as he attempted to get back on his feet.
Several players from both sides gathered around the incident before Spain striker Borja Iglesias intervened in an effort to separate those involved. Coaching staff, team officials and senior players from both teams soon entered the field and succeeded in restoring order before the confrontation escalated further.
