Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has proposed former chess grandmaster Judit Polgar to become the country's next president.

The unexpected nomination follows a constitutional amendment passed by Hungarian lawmakers last week. This new amendment officially removes the current president, Tamas Sulyok, who is recognized as an ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Announcing the proposal on Facebook on Monday, PM Magyar emphasized the need for national cohesion during this political transition. "Our country needs unity, peace and a president of whom all Hungarians can be proud," Magyar stated.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Polgar on Tuesday to formally ask if she will accept the presidential nomination.
