Health officials have launched an emergency medical and vaccination drive at the Sangu Orphanage Ashram in Bandarban’s Lama Upazila following a measles outbreak. At least 24 students in the remote Trishdeba Para area of Phansiakhali Union have shown symptoms of the virus.
On Sunday (May 10), a specialized medical team reached the remote hilly terrain to provide day-long treatment and vaccinations. The initiative was directed by Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Golam Mostafa Nadim, who noted that similar emergency interventions were recently required in the Mro Para area of Rupasipara Union.
Led by Medical Officer Dr. Mohammad Kausar Ikram, the team navigated difficult mountain paths to reach the orphanage. While most children were treated on-site, those with severe symptoms were referred to the Upazila Health Complex for advanced care.
In addition to medical aid, the team distributed medicines and briefed residents on hygiene protocols to contain the infection. The mission included Senior Staff Nurse Md. Imran, health assistants, and local volunteers. Sangu Orphanage Director Ankya Mong Marma assisted the team, confirming that the Health Department remains on high alert with 24-hour surveillance in the region.
