The National Citizens Party (NCP) has announced its first batch of 100 candidates for Upazila Parishad chairmen and municipal mayors. The announcement was made during a press conference at the party's central office on Sunday, May 10.
Sarjis Alam, Chairman of the NCP’s Local Government Election Steering Committee, stated that the candidates were selected based on merit and eligibility. The list includes individuals from diverse backgrounds, including former political activists and newcomers.
Addressing questions regarding party affiliations, Alam noted that while some candidates were previously associated with the BNP or Jamaat-e-Islami, others are entirely new to politics. He also confirmed that the list includes individuals who left the Awami League several years ago to support the July Movement against "autocratic" governance.
Regarding a potential 11-party alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, Alam clarified that the NCP is currently campaigning independently. "Selecting coalition candidates for every upazila is complex," he explained. "However, we remain open to future discussions regarding an alliance if necessary."
NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan called on the government to release a definitive election timeline, noting that a clear schedule is essential for candidate preparation. The party intends to announce further candidates for all remaining upazilas and municipalities in subsequent phases.
