National Disaster Preparedness Day was observed in Kurigram on Tuesday (10 March) with rallies, fire drills and a discussion meeting.

The programme was organised by the district administration and implemented under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief with the theme: “We will fight against disasters through preparedness and build a youth-driven Bangladesh.”

The day began with a colourful rally at 10:00 am from the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The rally marched through major roads of the town. Officials and employees of different government departments, members of voluntary organisations and local residents joined the procession.

After the rally, members of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence conducted a practical demonstration on fire safety and emergency response in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The drill showed how to respond during a fire and demonstrated different firefighting techniques.

Participants said the demonstration helped raise awareness about basic disaster preparedness and emergency response.

Among those present were Deputy Commissioner Annapurna Debnath, Additional Deputy Commissioners B. M. Kudrat-e-Khuda and Zakir Hossain, Assistant Commissioners Sheikh Mahbubey Sobhani, A. B. M. Mejbah Uddin Ahmed, and Farhana Yasmin, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Abdul Matin, and Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service Md. Enamul Haque.

Representatives of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, NGO members and officials from various government departments also attended the event.

Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall. Speakers highlighted that in a disaster-prone country like Bangladesh, early preparation and public awareness can significantly reduce damage and loss.

They stressed the importance of involving young people in building a strong and disaster-resilient society.
