Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the family card program as per his election promise. The program was inaugurated at around 11am on Tuesday (March 10) at the T&T ground in Banani, adjacent to the capital's Karail slum.
This morning, low-income people gathered at the T&D ground. Many of them have already received government messages on their mobile phones that money will be deposited. Tears of joy are in their eyes at the state financial assistance before Eid. Some are dreaming of meeting the cost of medicine with the assistance money, while others are dreaming of saving some money.
Ultimately, 37,567 female-headed households have been selected to receive the allowance. The pilot project is being implemented in 13 city corporations and 15 wards of unions in 13 districts of the country.
In a briefing at the Secretariat on Monday (March 9), Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Social Welfare Minister Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain said that one card will be given to each family of 5 people. If there are more members, it will be considered proportionally. The government will distribute the cards door to door completely free of cost. There will be no party influence in this. Transparency will be ensured, and action will be taken if any complaint is received. To ensure women's empowerment, the family card will be given to the 'mother' or the female head of the family. At the pilot stage, the government will provide 2,500 taka per month to each family in a mobile wallet or bank account.
