The BNP government, led by Tarique Rahman, plans to launch a family card program to support women’s financial independence. Under this initiative, each cardholder will receive 2,500 taka per month.
The Finance Ministry will hold a press conference on Monday, March 9, to share details of the program. The following day, March 10, the Prime Minister will hand over the family cards to women in Dhaka’s Karail area.
On Saturday night, March 7, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan said, “A press conference on the family card will be held at 11 am in the Finance Ministry conference room. Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Social Welfare Minister Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain will speak at the event.”
Initially, the program will launch in one union of each of the 14 upazilas as part of the election promise. Although the official inauguration was first planned for Bogra, it has now been shifted to Dhaka’s Karail area.
Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain explained, “The family card will eventually cover the entire country. A cabinet sub-committee, led by the Finance Minister, recommended the pilot program, which was finalized under the Prime Minister’s leadership. The program targets mothers in abject poverty, low-income families, and women who head their households. Distribution will be phased, starting from one ward, then expanding to unions nationwide.”
He added, “This initiative was an election promise of BNP. Beneficiaries will receive 2,500 taka monthly, regardless of political affiliation, religion, or caste. Information for selecting recipients is being collected door-to-door to ensure accuracy.”
