A Bangladeshi stevedore is missing after falling into the sea from a cargo vessel anchored outside Chattogram Port on Sunday, according to port authorities.
The man, identified as Yasin, 50, fell from the MV Crimson Grace at the port’s Alpha Anchorage at about 11:37 a.m. Navy and Coast Guard teams launched a joint search operation shortly after the incident.
Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim confirmed the incident.
Authorities believe Yasin may have been carried northward by the tidal current after falling into the water. Rescue teams are searching the surrounding waters.
The operation includes two Bangladesh Navy vessels and a SWADS boat, along with two Coast Guard vessels and a boat. The Coast Guard’s Eastern Zone also confirmed its involvement.
Hamim said the Coast Guard was notified immediately and that the port authority was continuously broadcasting VHF radio messages to nearby vessels, asking them to assist in the search.
The search was ongoing as of Sunday, and Yasin’s condition and whereabouts had not been confirmed.
