Initiatives have been taken to build a 500-bed government medical college hospital in Patenga area of Chattogram city. According to sources concerned, the hospital will be built to provide complete medical facilities including a permanent campus of the Medical College Hospital under the management of the Bangladesh Navy.

To this end, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury inspected the proposed area on Friday afternoon. He inspected the land acquired by the Navy located on the west side of the Banouja Ulkar Abad Zone-2 in the Muslimabad area adjacent to Marine Drive. A total of 14.21 acres of the Navy and an additional 2.7 acres, a total of about 17 acres of land, are being considered as a possible site for this hospital.

During the inspection, Commander Chattogram Naval Region Rear Admiral Md. Moinul Hasan informed the Finance Minister about the geographical environment, communication system, infrastructure and future development prospects of the land. Senior officials of CDA, District Administration, Land Office, Navy and Banauja Ulka were present.

Sources said that the hospital has been planned to be built on the model of Kurmitola General Hospital in Dhaka. It will have emergency department, ICU, NICU, burn unit, trauma center, complete lab and medical college facilities. At the same time, there is a proposal to set up a permanent campus of Navy Medical College here.

Those concerned said that if the proposed hospital is implemented, modern healthcare will be ensured for the people of Patenga, Jele Para and the surrounding coastal areas. At the same time, the medical infrastructure of the city is expected to be further strengthened and expanded.

After the inspection, the Finance Minister told reporters that increasing investment in the health sector is the government's priority. This initiative to build a hospital in Patenga is timely and will play a role in strengthening the medical infrastructure of Chattogram.

He said that in addition to the large-scale hospital, there are also plans to set up separate institutes for nursing institutes and medical technologists. The suitability of the land is being reviewed considering the long-standing medical service needs of the people of the southern part of Chattogram, Patenga, airport area, EPZ and Karnaphuli regions.
