


A man has been arrested with a foreign-made 7.65 mm pistol in a special operation by the Detective Branch (DB) in Chittagong city.
The arrested individual is Md. Saiful Islam, 44. He was detained on Saturday (April 18) from the Atura Depot–Kamarabad intersection area under Bayezid Bostami police station.
Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed disclosed the information at a press briefing held on Sunday (April 19) at the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) media center in Dampara.
According to police, DB officers set up a temporary checkpoint in front of Popular Medical Hall pharmacy based on confidential information. During the operation, a passenger CNG autorickshaw was stopped and searched.
At that time, one passenger attempted to flee but was quickly detained by DB members. A search conducted in front of witnesses recovered a foreign-made pistol from his waist. The weapon bore the inscription “MADE IN U.S.A., 7.65.”
Police said Saiful Islam is originally from Char Hair area under Jahazmara Union of Hatia upazila in Noakhali. He currently resides in a rented house in the Bibirhat Kacha Bazar area under Panchlaish police station in Chittagong.
During initial questioning, DB officials said the suspect was carrying the weapon allegedly for criminal purposes. Police also claimed he planned to use it to intimidate people in different parts of the city.
Law enforcement sources added that Saiful had been active in several areas including Chalitali, Wazedia, Kuayish, Oxygen, Baluchhara, Hamzarbagh and Muradpur.
According to CMP records, he has five cases filed against him at different police stations, including charges related to weapons, drugs and theft.
