A Bangladeshi expatriate, Alam Sheikh (48), was murdered inside his rented room in Malaysia. He was a resident of Nayabari village under Khidirpara union in Louhjang upazila of Munshiganj district.
Family members said Alam had been living in Malaysia for about 35 years. He was the son of late Mofiz Sheikh. At the time of the incident, he was staying in the Kampung Jawa area of Klang in Selangor state.
According to the family’s account, two men—Faruk and Pannu—from Jhalakathi district had recently visited Malaysia. They reportedly travelled at the recommendation of Shahidul, a Dhaka resident and acquaintance of Alam. The two stayed with Alam at his residence.
Alam was scheduled to return to Bangladesh on the 10th of this month and had already completed all travel preparations, including purchasing his flight ticket. Before the incident, he went shopping with Faruk and Pannu, during which they bought gold ornaments, mobile phones and other valuable items.
On January 31, Faruk and Pannu allegedly left Alam’s residence in the evening and later returned. After ringing the doorbell, Alam opened the door and went back to sleep. Police believe the two then entered the room, suffocated Alam and struck him on the head with a rod, killing him. They allegedly fled with his passport, gold ornaments, mobile phone and other belongings, locking the door from the outside before leaving.
Later that afternoon, neighbours became suspicious after failing to get any response from Alam. They broke open the door and found his body sitting on a chair. The police were immediately informed and later recovered the body.
A murder case has been filed with Malaysian authorities. Efforts are underway to repatriate the body to Bangladesh within two days. The family is also in contact with the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia for necessary assistance.
Family members approached Louhjang Police Station to lodge a complaint. However, police said no case can be recorded in Bangladesh as the incident occurred abroad.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Louhjang Police Station, Monir Hossain, confirmed the matter, saying legal proceedings must be handled by Malaysian authorities. He added that he visited Alam’s home on Thursday, where his wife, two daughters and relatives were found repeatedly fainting in grief.
