


A prisoner named Abdur Rahman Mia (70) has died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Central Jail. The doctor on duty declared him dead at around 11:30 am on Saturday (January 31). It is learned that he was the vice-president of the banned Ward No. 24 South Agrabad Awami League.
The deceased prisoner was an accused in a case under the Explosives Act of Kotwali Police Station. He had been suffering from multiple complex diseases including lung cancer for a long time. A hospital examination revealed that his cancer had spread to the brain. In addition, other complex diseases including high blood pressure were also present in his body.
According to prison sources, Abdur Rahman Mia entered the prison as a prisoner on November 17, 2025 in a case filed by Kotwali Police Station. Later, when his physical condition deteriorated, he was admitted to Chittagong Medical College (CMCH) Hospital for advanced treatment on December 24, 2025 and January 26, 2026. After about a month of treatment at Chamek Hospital, he was initially brought back to prison.
The deceased was the son of the late Zain Uddin Daraf Ali of Sipahi Bari in North Agrabad Muhuri Para under Double Mooring Police Station in Hazti Nagari.
District Magistrate Syed Shah Sharif of Chattogram Central Jail confirmed the death.
