A long-standing family dispute in Chauddagram turned violent on Sunday when an Oman returnee allegedly vandalized his younger brother’s home and cut down several trees in an attempt to evict the family.
The incident occurred at Chandakara village in Batisa Union. The victim, Kajal Begum—wife of Dubai expatriate Shah Alam—has filed a formal complaint at the Chauddagram Model Police Station against her brother-in-law, Belal Hossain.
Local sources reveal that the conflict began between Belal and his father, Khokon Mia. Recently, Belal reportedly sold soil from his father’s agricultural land without permission. After the father reported the matter to the local UP Panel Chairman, an enraged Belal allegedly attacked his brother’s house, smashing windows and felling trees.
"Shah Alam is abroad and has no part in this dispute," said the brothers' mother, Aleya Begum. "Yet Belal has unjustly destroyed his property and repeatedly harassed his wife, Kajal. We demand justice."
Belal’s wife, Asma Akhter, claimed the dispute stems from financial grievances, alleging that Khokon Mia purchased land in his own name using money Belal sent from abroad. She also noted that Belal is currently undergoing treatment for mental health issues, though she admitted that the destruction of Shah Alam’s property was wrong.
Syed Sana Ullah, Second Officer of Chauddagram Model Police Station, confirmed receipt of the complaint. "An investigation is underway, and necessary legal action will follow," he stated.
