Residents of Porsha upazila in Naogaon are living in fear as armed robberies occur almost every night along roads and marketplaces. Locals report that criminal gangs are blocking roads with fallen trees to stop vehicles and then robbing passengers at gunpoint. Shops in markets and roadside stalls are being looted after breaking locks, especially during nighttime when traders return home.
On Wednesday night alone, robbers attacked three locations along a 7 km stretch of the Saraigachhi-Adda regional highway, robbing vehicles and looting 18 shops at Bejora Mor after holding night guards hostage. A similar incident took place earlier on Sunday night at Moshan Tola Mor, where passengers were threatened and robbed of cash, gold jewelry, and phones.
Locals allege that the police have shown little initiative in preventing these crimes and often arrive only after the incidents. Business owners express frustration and concern over the repeated attacks, citing substantial financial losses.
In response to growing pressure, Naogaon Superintendent of Police Sufiul Sarwar BPM, Sapahar Circle ASP Shyamoli, and Porsha Thana OC Mintu Rahman visited the affected areas on Thursday morning to assess the situation.
