A 50-year-old man remains missing after falling from a ferry boat into the Kapotaksha River at Balia Kheyaghat in Tala upazila on Tuesday afternoon.
The missing person, identified as Rabiul Islam, is the son of the late Munsur Ali from Paikgachha, Khulna. He had recently been residing in the Magura area of Tala.
According to eyewitness Shafiqul Islam, the incident occurred while Rabiul was crossing the river by boat. Rabiul, who reportedly suffered from epilepsy, suddenly fell ill during the crossing and tumbled into the water.
Following the accident, a local fire service unit arrived at the scene to begin a search. Due to the complexity of the river conditions, a specialized diving team was called in and joined the operation around 5:00 p.m.
Local administration officials, including Tala Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Tarek Hasan, Assistant Superintendent of Police Sheikh Mohammad Nurullah, and Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahidul Islam, visited the site to monitor the situation.
The rescue operation was officially suspended on Tuesday night due to low visibility and the risks associated with nighttime diving. OC Md. Shahidul Islam confirmed that the search for Rabiul Islam is scheduled to resume early Wednesday morning.
