The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against Ziaul Haque Sumon, a former councilor of the Dakshin Halishahar ward of the Chattogram City Corporation, and his wife Shahnaz Akhtar. According to the ACC's allegations, they have acquired and possessed huge assets inconsistent with their known income.
Deputy Assistant Director Apel Mahmud Biplob filed the two cases at the ACC's Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 on Thursday (January 1). Deputy Director Subel Ahmed confirmed the case, saying that if anyone else is found involved during the investigation, it will also be included in the investigation.
The ACC's investigation found that Sumon's legal income from 2013-14 to 2021-22 was only Tk 12.646 million, while his assets and expenses during the same period amounted to about Tk 17.77 million.
The case alleges that Suman has completely concealed assets worth Tk 86,90,237 in his asset declaration. In addition, assets worth Tk 165,110,352 have been acquired and possessed inconsistently with his income. A case has been filed against him under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004. On the other hand, a case has been filed against Suman's wife Shahnaz Akhtar for acquiring assets worth Tk 22,226,269. Investigations have revealed that her legal income is only Tk 66,52,000. It is alleged that she acquired and possessed these assets with the help of her husband.
