The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has detained an official from the President’s Office (Bangabhaban) for his alleged involvement in hacking the X (formerly Twitter) account of Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
The detainee, Mohammad Sarwar-e-Alam, serves as an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban.
Police conducted a late-night raid on Tuesday (February 3) at a government residence near the Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium. According to DB sources, Sarwar was taken into custody following allegations that his official email or device was used to gain unauthorized access to the Jamaat chief's verified account to post "controversial and misogynistic" content.
DMP Additional Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the detention, stating that Sarwar’s laptop and mobile phone have been seized for forensic examination. "He is currently being interrogated at the DB office. We will determine the next legal steps based on the findings," he said.
The move follows a formal complaint by a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation that visited Bangabhaban on Tuesday. The party claimed their internal forensic analysis proved the phishing email used in the hack originated from a Bangabhaban server.
Jamaat leaders alleged that the hack was a "premeditated conspiracy" to tarnish the party’s image by publishing statements that contradict its official stance on women’s rights.
