The "Sagar-Runi Memorial Football Tournament-2026" began Wednesday night at the Fortune Sports Arena, honoring the memory of murdered journalists Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi while renewing calls for justice.
The event, which brings together 40 media professionals from television, print, and digital outlets, aims to foster unity among journalists and provide a healthy outlet for those working in high-pressure environments.
The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. Babar Ali, the renowned mountaineer and the only Bangladeshi to conquer four "eight-thousander" peaks, including Everest. Addressing the crowd, Ali praised the initiative, noting that the event serves as more than just a game.
"This memorial tournament is a powerful reminder that justice for Sagar and Runi has yet to be delivered," Ali said. "It is a meaningful way to keep their memory—and the demand for accountability—alive."
Four matches were held on the opening night, officiated by FIFA-listed referee Nayan and BFF-listed referee Rana: Sangu XI vs. Halda XI: Sangu XI secured a 2-1 victory in a high-energy opener. Matamuhuri XI vs. Karnaphuli XI: Matamuhuri XI won 2-0. Sangu XI vs. Matamuhuri XI: Sangu XI continued their winning streak with a 2-1 win. Karnaphuli XI vs. Halda XI: The final match of the night ended in a 1-1 draw.
Organizers noted that the tournament is designed to bridge the gap between veteran and new-generation journalists. By stepping away from their desks and onto the pitch, participants hope to strengthen professional relationships and highlight the legacy of the late journalist couple.
The tournament concludes on January 10. Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain is scheduled to attend the final match as the chief guest to present prizes to the winners.
