Bangladesh opted to bat first after winning the toss in the second Test against Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday, setting the stage for a historic match.
The match is a landmark occasion for Bangladesh cricket as veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim became the first Bangladeshi player to feature in 100 Test matches. The 38-year-old, who debuted nearly two decades ago at Lord’s, was celebrated as he walked out for this milestone appearance, which reflects Bangladesh's own 155-match journey in Test cricket.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto chose to bat, anticipating that the pitch conditions would favor batting early on. The hosts maintained their established top order. Left-arm spinner Hasan Murad retained his place in the squad following his impressive outing in the previous Test in Sylhet.
Ireland made one alteration to their XI, bringing in leg-spinner Gavin Hoey for fast bowler Craig Young. This move anticipates the pitch becoming more favorable for spin bowling from the second day onward.
Ireland’s captain, Andy Balbirnie, expressed his team's determination, stating they would "push hard to spoil the Mushfiqur celebrations."
