Zimbabwe took full control of the one-off Test against Bangladesh on day one, finishing at 136 for 1 and trailing by just four runs after dismantling the visitors for a meager 140 at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday.
Opting to bowl first, Zimbabwe’s pace attack utilized the pitch's early moisture and extra bounce to devastating effect. While Mominul Haque offered strong resistance with a fluent 60, Bangladesh’s batting lineup crumbled spectacularly. From a steady 113 for 2, the Tigers lost their last eight wickets for a mere 27 runs.
Left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri spearheaded the demolition, claiming 4 for 61. Newly appointed Test captain Richard Ngarava set the tone with brilliant figures of 2 for 18, while Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans also chipped in with two wickets each. Only three Bangladeshi batters—Mominul, Shadman Islam (20), and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (19)—managed to reach double figures in a dismal batting display.
In response, Zimbabwe’s openers immediately capitalized on the momentum. Innocent Kaia and Ben Curran shared a dominant 89-run partnership in just over 16 overs, scoring at a brisk rate. Curran aggressively struck 42 before falling to a sharp delivery from pacer Khaled Ahmed.
Kaia continued his commanding knock, ending the day unbeaten on 76 alongside Brendan Taylor (17*). Despite a brief period of disciplined bowling late in the day from Hasan Mahmud and Taijul Islam, Bangladesh failed to make further inroads. With nine wickets in hand and parity nearly achieved, Zimbabwe is strongly positioned as day two approaches.
