Police recovered the body of an unidentified woman from the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on Tuesday morning.
The body was found near the New Fishery Ghat area of the city at around 10:30am on August 18 after reportedly being carried by the river’s tidal water.
According to Abdur Rab, officer-in-charge of Chattogram Sadarghat Naval Police Station, local residents noticed the body after it became trapped near the riverbank and informed police. Officers subsequently recovered it from the site.
Police said the deceased appeared to be a middle-aged woman, but her identity could not immediately be established.
According to the police, her left leg appeared to be fractured, and there were signs of an injury around her ankle. Investigators believe she may have died approximately two days before the body was recovered, although the exact cause and time of death will require further examination.
The body has been sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police will also collect the woman's fingerprints as part of efforts to establish her identity.
Authorities have not yet determined how the woman ended up in the Karnaphuli River. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding her death and determine whether the injuries were related to an accident or another cause.
The autopsy report and further investigation are expected to provide more information about the woman's identity, cause of death and the circumstances leading to her death.
