The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has launched a dedicated pink-coloured women’s bus service aimed at ensuring safer and more comfortable public transportation for working women in the capital.
The buses will be operated by female drivers and female conductors.
The service was officially inaugurated on Tuesday (August 18) at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon.
Speaking at the inauguration, Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam said the pink bus service was introduced as part of the government's election manifesto.
He said the initiative would not only provide women with safer and more comfortable transportation but also encourage greater participation of women in the public transport sector.
The event was attended by, among others, Railways and Road Transport and Highways Division State Minister Habibur Rashid, Road Transport and Highways Division Secretary Dr. Mohammad Ziaul Haque, and Women and Children Affairs Ministry Secretary Yasmin.
The programme was chaired by BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Molla, an additional secretary.
According to BRTC officials, the pink buses will primarily serve working women and female passengers, with women recruited as both drivers and conductors.
A separate bus service for women had previously been introduced in the capital, but it failed to operate regularly for various reasons.
BRTC officials hope the renewed Pink Bus Service will expand safe public transportation options for women and make daily commuting more secure and convenient.
