A total of 174 Bangladeshi nationals who had been detained for an extended period in detention centres in Libya have returned home.
The repatriation was carried out through an initiative of the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, with assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They were safely and humanely repatriated from the Ganfuda Detention Centre in Benghazi.
The returnees arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6:00am on Tuesday (August 18) aboard Buraq Air flight UZ-222.
Among those who returned were three women, one child and 15 people suffering from illnesses.
According to information available, the Bangladeshis had attempted to travel to Europe across the Mediterranean Sea in search of better economic opportunities. They were subsequently rescued or detained during their journey and spent a prolonged period in detention at the Ganfuda facility under difficult conditions.
The Bangladesh Embassy has been coordinating regularly with Libyan authorities and IOM to facilitate the safe return of Bangladeshi nationals detained in Libya.
With approval from the local administration and logistical support from IOM, the latest group of 174 Bangladeshis was successfully repatriated to Bangladesh.
