A 9-year-old third-grade student was killed after being run over by a passenger bus while she was on her way to school holding her mother's hand in Phulbari, Dinajpur, on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shipa Moni, daughter of Istamul Haque of North Sujapur village in Phulbari municipality. She was a third-grade student at North Point School in Phulbari. Her mother, Rikta Parvin, works at the same school as a school attendant.
The accident occurred at around 7:45am near the Bus Stand-Bottola area of Phulbari municipal town on the Dinajpur–Dhaka regional highway.
According to police and local residents, Shipa was crossing the highway with her mother on their way to school when a speeding passenger bus travelling from Dinajpur towards Birampur struck her and fled.
The bus, identified as Shahi Dhaka Metro-B-12-3315, was later seized by police.
Locals rescued Shipa in critical condition and took her to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared her dead.
News of Shipa's death sparked anger among local residents.
From 9am to 10am, protesters blocked the Dinajpur–Dhaka regional highway in front of the Phulbari Upazila Health Complex, demanding the arrest of the driver responsible for the accident.
The blockade caused hundreds of vehicles to become stranded on both sides of the highway, disrupting traffic.
The protesters withdrew the blockade around 10am after receiving assurances from Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ahmed Hasan.
Phulbari Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ferdous Alam said the bus involved in the accident had been seized and taken to the police station.
However, the driver and his assistant fled after the accident.
Police completed the initial examination of the body and handed it over to the family. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
