Four candidates have withdrawn their nominations from two parliamentary constituencies in Jhalakathi on the final day of nomination withdrawal for the 13th National Parliament election.
According to the Jhalakathi District Commissioner’s office, which also serves as the Returning Officer, three candidates withdrew their nominations from Jhalakathi-1 on Tuesday (20 January). They are Mahmuda Alam Mitu of the National Citizen Party (NCP), Muhammad Mustafizur Rahman of the Bangladesh Labor Party, and Md Golam Azam, an independent candidate.
On the same day, Sheikh Jamal Hossain of the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) withdrew his nomination from Jhalakathi-2.
According to the Election Commission (EC) schedule, Tuesday was the final day for withdrawing nominations. The final list of candidates will be published on Wednesday, followed by the allocation of election symbols. Official election campaigning will begin on Thursday.
Local political leaders say the withdrawal of multiple candidates from the two constituencies has reshaped the electoral landscape. They believe the contest will now be more straightforward, with clearer competition among the remaining candidates.
The 13th National Parliament election and referendum will be held simultaneously on 12 February. Meanwhile, the district administration and election-related agencies have intensified preparations to ensure a smooth polling process.
