Newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir said diplomatic channels are being used to bring back two suspects arrested in India in connection with the murder of former Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
He made the remarks at a press conference at the Police Headquarters Media Center in Dhaka on Monday (March 9).
The IGP said efforts are underway through diplomatic channels to repatriate the two suspects, adding that they are expected to be brought back to Bangladesh soon.
Highlighting law and order as the police’s main priority, Ali Hossain Fakir said no political identity will protect extortionists. Police have prepared a list of suspected extortionists and drug dealers, and every police station will be turned into a “zero-complaint center.”
“No police member will play an overzealous role. At the same time, citizens must follow the law,” he said.
The IGP also warned that no concession will be given if any banned organization is involved in illegal activities.
Addressing public concerns about the police force, he acknowledged that misconduct by some members has damaged the institution’s reputation. He said promotions and postings will be based on merit and integrity, with no nepotism.
“There will be honest and competent people in the police. An empty cowshed is better than a naughty cow,” he said.
Ali Hossain Fakir also noted that the government is considering appointing a judicial magistrate at every police station to speed up legal processes. He added that the government will decide on any changes to police uniforms.
