During the recent India-Russia summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin was honored with a special vegetarian banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The menu featured diverse regional Indian delicacies, but one dish, Gucchi Doon Chetin (stuffed morel mushrooms with walnut chutney) from Jammu and Kashmir, stood out due to the high cost of its main ingredient: Gucchi mushrooms.

Gucchi mushrooms are one of the world's most expensive fungi, selling for approximately Rs.35,000 to Rs.40,000 per kilogram, with prices occasionally soaring up to Rs. 50,000 per kilogram. Their extreme cost is attributed to their rarity and inability to be easily cultivated.

Gucchi mushrooms are wild and require a highly specific temperature and soil type to grow. They are typically found at high altitudes in the Himalayan regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, emerging only for a few weeks in the spring season just after the snow melts. They can also be found growing in the aftermath of forest fires.

The challenging task of foraging the elusive fungi takes local communities weeks of effort, navigating difficult terrain. They can only be harvested for a short, favorable period. Gucchi mushrooms are in high demand among culinary masters for their umami flavor, which enhances various gravies, soups, and stews.

Due to their meaty texture, they serve as an ideal meat replacement in vegan or vegetarian dishes, explaining their inclusion in the all-vegetarian menu for Putin's dinner. They are also valued by locals in traditional medicine for various health benefits.

The dinner marked Putin's first visit to India since December 2021. The vegetarian menu included items like gur sandesh (West Bengal), yellow dal tadka (North India), murukku (South India), and jhol momo.
