U.S. President Donald Trump asserted his dominance at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France, playfully telling global leaders "I'm the boss" during a session on global economic security. The three-day summit concluded with a unified pledge of support for Ukraine and cautious optimism regarding the recent U.S.-Iran interim peace deal.
The summit, held at the French resort of Evian-les-Bains, marked a noticeable shift in the U.S. approach to major global conflicts, though European allies remain wary of Washington's long-term commitments.
Outcomes from the G7 Summit: A Shift in Stance on Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies successfully convinced Trump that Ukraine’s battlefield strategy is yielding results. In a press conference, Trump described Moscow as the "offensive" party and acknowledged that Russia is losing significantly more soldiers than Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted a "real change in approach" from Trump, who has historically been skeptical of foreign aid to Kyiv. The G7 leaders issued a joint statement that significantly bolsters Ukraine's leverage in potential peace talks with Moscow.
Deep Caution Over the Iran Peace Deal
While G7 leaders welcomed the preliminary memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the U.S. and Iran to halt their military conflict, the atmosphere remained tense. Trump explicitly warned that the deal is not final.
"If I don't like it, if they don't behave, we'll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head, OK?" Trump told reporters.
European diplomats privately expressed concerns that an inexperienced U.S. negotiating team might fail to secure a long-term nuclear framework or curb Iran's ballistic missile program during the upcoming 60-day negotiation window in Switzerland.
Reducing Economic Reliance on China
The G7 nations agreed to step up coordination to aggressively diversify their supply chains and cut dependence on China for critical minerals. These metals are vital for the defense, technology, and renewable energy sectors. The alliance plans to align national stockpiles and expand the monitoring role of the International Energy Agency (IEEA).
AI Rules and Accountability
During a working lunch, leaders met with top tech executives, including OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The discussions focused heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) liability, the accountability of automated "bots" and autonomous agents, and how governments can combat AI-generated misinformation.
