NATO confirmed Wednesday that it was informed in advance of the US plan to reduce some troops deployed to the alliance's eastern flank, calling the move an "adjustment" and "nothing unusual."
A NATO official emphasized that Washington’s commitment remains "clear" and that the US force posture in Europe is still "larger than it has been for many years," particularly compared to pre-2022 levels.
The scale-down, which has not yet been officially announced by the US, was previewed by Romania's defence ministry, which indicated the halt of a brigade rotation with elements in countries including Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Despite some allies' anxieties over a potential US reduction amid fears of Russian aggression, NATO quickly downplayed the move, stressing that the alliance has "robust defence plans" in place.
