A discussion and award ceremony marking World Environment Day took place Thursday morning at the Gazipur PTI Auditorium, emphasizing the urgent need for localized and global environmental protection.
Presided over by Md. Arefin Badal, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment's Gazipur Office, the event brought together local officials, scientists, and students. Dr. Md. Ismail Hossain, Chief Scientific Officer at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, presented the keynote paper on sustainable practices.
During the primary discussion, Badal highlighted the cascading, unseen effects of global warming. He warned that rising temperatures are melting polar ice, which threatens to release ancient, dormant microbes into the environment. He noted that this phenomenon could potentially trigger new, unfamiliar global health crises similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other notable speakers addressing regional environmental challenges included Ahmed Hossain Bhuiyan from the Local Government Department, Md. Aminul Islam of Gazipur Government Women’s College, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Mozammel Hossain Reza, and Dr. Md. Sayem Morshed from the Civil Surgeon’s Office.
To foster environmental awareness among the youth, the program concluded with an award ceremony honoring local students who won a drawing competition organized for the occasion.
