Bobi Begum a 70-year-old speech-impaired woman who served as a voluntary cleaner at Methikanda Railway Station for two decades, died early Thursday morning following a brutal assault and robbery. She passed away at approximately 1:15 AM while being rushed from Raipura Upazila Health Complex to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
The attack took place around 2 AM last Saturday (July 4). Assailants entered the abandoned station room where Bobi lived, beat her severely, and looted the life savings she had collected from passengers and local residents over many years.
Station Master SM Jasim, who accompanied her in the ambulance, noted the tragedy of her passing as the vehicle crossed the very station she had called home. According to Dr. Jannatul Naeem, Bobi was admitted with severe respiratory distress and undetectable blood pressure; despite receiving oxygen and saline, her condition failed to improve.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with citizens demanding the immediate arrest of those who targeted the defenseless woman. Bobi was well-known locally for cleaning the station platforms and toilets without pay.
Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mojibur Rahman confirmed that the body has been sent for an autopsy. "Police are analyzing CCTV footage and conducting raids to identify and arrest those involved," he stated. Raipura UNO Masud Rana expressed deep sorrow, pledging that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
