The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has ordered the republication of recruitment results for 46,000 primary school assistant teacher candidates. A bench headed by the Chief Justice delivered the ruling on Thursday.
The case centers on a 2023 primary teacher recruitment circular. According to senior lawyer Advocate Tajul Islam, who represented the writ petitioners, the initial appointments were made under the previous system, allocating 84 percent of the posts to various quotas.
Following the July Revolution and a subsequent Supreme Court mandate reforming the quota system, 151 candidates filed a writ petition in the High Court. They argued that future appointments must follow the revised guidelines, which allocate 93 percent of government jobs strictly on merit.
The High Court previously ruled in favor of the petitioners, declaring the quota-heavy appointments illegal and ordering the recruitment of the 151 individuals. The government challenged this verdict, elevating the case to the Appellate Division.
Concluding the hearing on Thursday, the apex court disposed of the government's appeal with three specific observations and mandated a complete republication of the results for all 46,000 candidates to ensure compliance with the new merit-based system.
