Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for a more adaptive and technology-driven United Nations Police (UNPOL) to effectively counter increasingly complex global security threats.
Speaking at the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) 2026 at the UN Headquarters on Wednesday, the Minister emphasized that modernizing law enforcement is a necessity, not an option. "Tomorrow's security challenges cannot be addressed with yesterday's capabilities," he told the assembly.
As criminal networks become more sophisticated and transnational, Minister Ahmed stressed the need for greater investment in highly skilled personnel and innovative technologies. He highlighted that Bangladesh has already initiated significant domestic police reforms to better align with these evolving global standards.
The Minister introduced two key proposals to strengthen international cooperation
Knowledge and Innovation Network A platform for UN member states to systematically share expertise and best practices.
Climate-Security Initiative An annual Conference on Environment and Policing to address security risks triggered by climate change.
These proposals underscore Bangladesh's proactive role in UN peacekeeping and its commitment to shaping a future-ready international security framework.
